National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, an annual observance to remind all Americans how important it is for individuals, families, and communities to be prepared for disasters and emergencies that can happen at any time. The staff at Society's Assets recommend that people with disabilities and their families plan ahead for the unique needs they may have during a weather or other emergency situation.

The Wisconsin Council on Physical Disabilities has developed a preparedness tool kit for persons with disabilities. It includes tips, checklists, forms, and other resources. Find the toolkit online at https://cpd.wisconsin.gov/toolkit.htm. If you don't have internet access, contact an Independent Living Coordinator at Society's Assets.

After a large natural disaster, help may not arrive for hours or days. Have emergency supplies like food, water, and medicines on hand to take care of yourself, your family, pets, and service animals. If you require medical devices, supplies, or assistive technology related to a disability, keep them with you. Planning starts by talking with everyone in your household. Decide on a meeting place and how you will stay connected. Check out the toolkit to learn about emergency wallet cards, evacuation, weather safety, and more. One helpful tool to use in an emergency is a visual communication tool. Its pictures promote understanding in many situations. Request a free, printed visual communication tool from Society's Assets.
